There are acts of every kind: Trapeze Artists swinging from one “safe” template to another, Contortionists twisting themselves to fit everyone’s expectations, Jugglers who trying not to drop all the shiny objects they’ve collected…
Growing up, I never fit in with the “cool kids” (I was as shocked by this as you are). Graduating from college with killer grades and a shiny new degree in Communication Design, I dodged the “so what’s your REAL job going to be” questions, and set off in search of a career with a capital C.
Imagine my surprise when I landed myself in a corporate circus as the singular design intern for a luxury hotel with a Michelin restaurant.
🙄 The employee handbook had 20+ pages on how women should dress, including a strict “no colourful nail polish” policy because *that’s* what makes someone professional
🙄 Staff weren’t allowed to use the front door because heaven forbid guests see us
🙄 There was a “Don’t forget to smile!” sign at every employee entrance
My years studying and perfecting my craft in UX/UI, web design, brand design, typography, colour theory – all went to updating daily restaurant menus in black and white.
Needless to say, I grew tired of walking the tightrope between “professional” and “personality.” I never felt safe in my work to express myself, or my ideas. The whole experience taught me that trying to squeeze yourself into someone else’s definition of “professional” is the fastest way to lose everything that makes you extraordinary.
It’s a promise that you can be yourself, and succeed with Flying Colours. Because being yourself is your biggest competitive advantage.
it's showtimeI’m not the person who fits in everywhere. If you’re reading this, you aren’t, either. Your story is probably
different from mine, but somehow we’ve both ended up in the same place: you’ve always known you
need to do things your way — and now you’re ready to damn well do it.
→ You’re an action taker and don’t let perfectionism hold you back
→ You’re not afraid to share your unconventional POV
→ You’re paving the path for impact and recognized as a leader
Sharing your personality is the ticket to a brand you’re proud to show off. Own your weird, and you’ll build a memorable top-of-mind brand.
Visuals matter. Being consistent with those visuals matters more. Learning to play with your assets makes consistent easy, without it ever turning boring.
Growth lies in accepting your brand is a forever work in progress. Focus on the joy of the process, instead of obsessing over perfecting the outcomes.
One-dimensional doesn’t fit you. In a homogenous, one-size-fits-all, bland world, let’s find pockets of colour & leave a distinctive, bold mark of YOU.
Step right up to witness death-defying feats of brand bravery as I interview service providers who’ve laughed in the face of “best practices” and dared to do things differently.
